In the French countryside, landowner Grigou possesses a plot between the farms of Martin and Aubert, both eager to acquire it. After the mayor misplaces the deed, the land is auctioned to Aubert, leading to Martin's eviction and his subsequent role as an innkeeper at a notorious inn. A decade later, Pierre Martin and Isabelle Aubert fall in love, but their fathers' longstanding feud casts doubt on their union.
